How Mice & Rats Get In

A mouse fits through a gap the width of a dime; a rat needs about a quarter. Once one gets in — usually with the first cold nights — it leaves a scent trail others follow. Traps alone just thin the line.

Final Call treats rodents as an entry problem, not just a population problem. We remove what's inside, then seal the gaps they came through — the difference between a quiet winter and the same problem every October.

Mice vs. Rats — What's In Your Illinois Home

House Mice

The most common rodent in Northern Illinois homes. Small, gray-brown, and constantly breeding indoors — they nest in wall voids and attics, squeezing through gaps most people would never think to seal.

Norway Rats

Bigger and heavier, burrowing under decks, sheds, and slabs before working in through foundation gaps and crawl spaces. Fewer than mice, but far more destructive to wiring and structure.

Deer Mice

Mostly a rural, garage, and outbuilding problem. White belly and feet set them apart from house mice. They're the main carrier of hantavirus, so droppings are best left to a professional.

How Our Rodent Control Works

Free Inspection

A licensed technician inspects inside and out — identifying the species, the nesting areas, and every entry point they're using.

Humane Trapping & Removal

We place professional traps in active runs and remove rodents already inside, checking and clearing on a set schedule.

Exclusion & Sealing

The step most companies skip. We seal gaps, cracks, and utility openings with rodent-proof materials so new rodents can't follow the trail in.

Follow-Up & Guarantee

Rodents back between visits? So are we — at no charge, for the life of your protection plan. That's the Final Call guarantee.

Signs You Have a Rodent Problem

You'll usually hear or find them before you see one:

  • Droppings along walls, in cabinets, or under the sink (dark, rice-grain size for mice)
  • Gnaw marks on food packaging, baseboards, or wiring
  • Scratching or scurrying in walls and ceilings, especially at night
  • A musky, ammonia-like smell in enclosed spaces
  • Nests of shredded paper, insulation, or fabric in hidden corners
  • Grease marks along baseboards where rodents run the same route

One mouse is rarely one mouse. A single female can produce dozens of offspring a year, so early activity becomes an infestation fast.

Rodent Control FAQs

How much does rodent control cost?

Rodent control is included in our Quad Shield™ Protection Plans, and larger infestations or extensive exclusion work are quoted after a free inspection. You'll get a firm price before any work begins — no mystery fees.

Do you seal the entry points, or just set traps?

Both. Sealing is what makes it last. We trap and remove the rodents inside, then close the gaps and openings they used to get in, so the problem doesn't simply refill after treatment.

Are your treatments safe for kids and pets?

Yes. We place traps and materials in areas rodents travel — inside wall voids, behind appliances, along entry points — not in your family's living space. We'll walk through placement with you before we start.

How long does it take to get rid of mice or rats?

Most homes see activity drop within the first week or two. Full resolution depends on the size of the infestation and the amount of sealing needed, which we'll estimate at your inspection.

Why do mice keep coming back every winter?

Because the entry points were never closed. Trapping thins the population, but as long as the gaps are open, cold weather drives new rodents in along the same scent trails. Exclusion is what breaks the cycle.

Can I get rid of rats and mice myself?

A snap trap from the hardware store catches the mouse standing on it. Here's what it misses:

  • The entry point stays open. Remove one rodent and the gap it used is still there for the next.
  • The scent trail remains. Rodents follow the smell of those before them straight back to the same spots.
  • Poison creates new problems. Store-bought bait can send a dying rodent into a wall void — and a dead-animal smell you can't reach for weeks.
  • You never find the source. Most entry points are hidden — behind appliances, along the roofline, where utility lines enter. Finding them takes knowing where to look.

We trap and remove humanely and efficiently, then close the openings so the problem doesn't refill.
